In 2015 Robert McCrum released his shortlist of the 100 Greatest Novels of All Time featuring Gulliver's Travels as "a satirical masterpiece." The journey begins with a short preamble in which Lemuel Gulliver gives a brief summary of his life and history before his travels.During his first voyage, Gulliver is dragged ashore after a shipwreck and is imprisoned by a race of small people, less than 6 inches (15 cm) tall, who are inhabitants of the island of Lilliput. After ensuring his good behavior, he is given a residence in Lilliput and becomes a favorite of the Lilliput Royal Court. The King of Lilliput also gives him permission to tour the city on the condition that he does not harm his subjects.
