Returning to the Mitchellverse is one of my favorite things to do. Nobody does speculative fiction better and Utopia Avenue is sure to take its place among his best books. I won’t bore you with a lot of lofty phrases about how this book transcends genre, effortlessly eschews tropes, blends heartbreaking realism seamlessly with science fantasy, and so on and so on. I think it is enough to say instead that if you are already a David Mitchell fan, you will love Utopia Avenue. There is a scene where one of the protagonists meets Sid Barrett of Pink Floyd in a movie theater that will blow your mind and as trippy a Horology Easter egg as any devotee could want. On the other hand, if you are not a David Mitchell fan, don’t you think it is time you became one?
